Trouble creating a windmap

Posted by Joan Miquel Angles at October 05. 2009

Hi,

I'm trying to create a new windmap following the steps posted on the FAQ.

I drop an elevation raster onto the windmap layer and then I drop a TAB file on the windmap layer. I don't drop any roughness raster nor any vegetation raster because I don't have this information, but I understand they're not necessary to create the windmap.

When I click on calculate, the cursor changes and I select an area in which I want the windmap to be created. The problem is that it starts to calculate for a while, but then I get an error that says:

"Failed to converge for direction 0 - please redefine task and try again (iteration limit reached)"

I'm not sure why I keep getting this error. However I've been able to create a windmap sometimes. Oh, and by the way, whenever I get this error, I can't save my work because it crashes and erases all information in the original file.

One last question: Is it necessary to have a *.wrg file in order to perform energy capture calculus? Or is it enough to create a windmap from the TAB data and then run a simulatin? If it is necessary, where can I get *.wrg files? Who sells them? is Openwind able to create them?

Thanx!

Hi Joan,

Please download the latest version. Failure to converge is now a warning and not an error as apparently it only happens in a tiny number of cells which are rarely of interest in terms of the windfarm.

The idea behind the windflow model in openWind is entirely for those people without access to a WRG. It is not recommended by us but simply made available for initial site scoping and the like. However, when associated with a TAB file it will do everything a WRG can do.

I hope this helps. If you have a repeatable crash with the latest version, please upload it to the FTP and let me know so I can go get it and test for myself (and perhaps fix the issue).

Hopefully its all working fine in the latest version.

Nick

Hi, I have been trawling through the OpenWind forum trying to get a direct answer to this; once one has created a wind map (ie outputted Wind Speed, Flow Angles), how does one then create a WRG? This is needed for the Energy Capture part of the analysis. I keep getting the message "Turbine 1 of Site Site Layer (x.shp) does not have access to an appropriate WRG". An answer to this would be great as it means I can then get full use out of the program for scoping.

The wind map can act as the wrg. Make sure all turbines are in the are covered by the wind map and that it is calculated for the very same heights than the hub heights.

Hi Goyo, thanks for the tip, it worked!
