how to produce merged WRG file

Posted by Ebubekir FIRTIN at October 01. 2009
Hi,

I have another question. I was reading the tutorial and just realized that you mentioned about a merged wrg file produced by using two metmasts at the test site.

My question is how did you produce the merged wrg file ?

Ah yes, I'm afraid that the answer to that question is not very helpful: usually with bespoke in-house code. However, if you are using the WRG with a TAB file then you can achieve the same effect with the upcoming open-source version of openWind which will allow you to Adjust to Masts. This isn't a true merged WRG as it only adjusts the mean wind speed and not the A and K values individually but as only the mean wind speeds matter when you associate to a TAB file, then it will have the same effectassuming that your two TAB files are not radically different. Windflow programs tend to work on adjusting the mean wind speeds and so the windflow for two different windflow programs will be similar but scaled by their met masts. The Adjust To Mast function in openWind takes advantage of this fact to give you quick and dirty way to achieve the same result as a merged WRG.

Hope this makes sense. Please tell me if not.

Nick

p.s. I am trying to release again this week.

Hi Nick,

I would like to confirm how the mean wind speeds are adjusted at any point between met masts. Are you using a distance or a distance-square relationship?

Also, my understanding is that the "Adjust to Mast" function is a standard function within the code when more than one Tab files are openend, meaning the user has no specific task to allow this, is this right?

Also, are you planning to allow for "true merged WRG" or will it remain in-house code?

Thanks

Hey Sebastian,

Good to hear from you. You're right of course it is not a true merged WRG. However, so long as you are using TAB files (met mast layers) in all your energy captures, it amounts to exactly the same thing. I use a distance-squared weighting unless there is just the one mast in which case I use a global adjustment.

The WRG is not adjusted when first loaded as I would never knowingly alter your data without asking you first. The adjust to mast is only available if you have one or more hub height met masts as children of the WRG and then you get to it by right-clicking the WRG. I cannot adjust your WRG to met masts which are not at the same height as I have no idea what the shear effect is for your mast.

Let me know whether this works for you or not.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi, happy to join you.

Please, how can I produce wind resource grid in OPenwind?

Thank you!
