Inflow angles

Posted by Eduard Diviu at March 10. 2010

Dear Nick,

I've noticed that when I create a new windmap, it appears a layer called Inflow Angles. I'd like to know what are the units used in this layer. Are they radiants?

Thanks

Hi Eduard,

At present they are the tan of the angle from the horizontal which is of course the gradient as a fraction. I am considering changing them to radians. There is much better support for converting and displaying units in the next version.

Hi Nick,

thanks for your quick answer. I'd like to use this inflow angle layer(s) as a restriction, however it is not possible to apply a parent validity. Is there anyway to use it? I want to exclude the locations where the inflow angle is bigger than a certain value due to windturbine specs.

Thank you again

Hi Nick,

I've already solved the problem, or at least I think so. With the inflow angle layer, I select newlayer/maximus and newlayer/minimum. That way I get two layers which can be used as restrictions.

I hope this is a good aproach to apply restrictions.

Thanks

Yes that's it. For the wind-flow model in openWind it seems you can just take the maximums as the reversal of wind direction appears to mirror the sign of the angles. For something more sophisticated such as Meteodyn output, you would probably want to take max and min as you suggest.

OpenWind currently takes high-precision WRGs from Meteodyn WT including turbulence intensity across the site and inflow angles.
