Multiple Turbine Orientations

Multiple Turbine Orientations

Posted by Nathaniel E. Vandal at August 04. 2010

Nick,

I am trying to create a workbook that will allow me to optimize between multiple WRGs, with different associations between each WRG.  I have created  workbook with layouts for each WRG, (WRGS are children of each layout in the heirarchy).  My question is whether or not turbines will move between layouts to find the best solution. From my tests, it looks like they get stuck in a particular layout and will not jump.  I also tried growing the layout to fix this, but the first WRGs in the heirarchy tend to fill up first and the later WRGs dont get any turbines, even though energy is higher.

I also had a question about areas where the WRGs overlap.  I have other workbooks with one layout and multiple WRGs as children.  I am assuming that OpenWind will use the first WRG in the heirarchy and then move downwards, if a turbine cannot test in that WRG.

I'd be happy to send workbooks if it would answer things.

Hope all is well and I enjoyed meeting you in Dallas.

Best regards,

Nathaniel

Hi Nathaniel,

I enjoyed meeting you too and hope to see you in Oklahoma or Montreal.

If you want turbines to jump around between multiple WRGs then I would recomend that you make all the WRGs children of the same site. Each WRG can still have its own met mast and area of validity. You're welcome to ftp your workbook to me but just let me know if you do as I don't regularly check the ftp site.

Nick,

Thanks.  That was the solution that I came up with. It didn't look like it was possible for turbines to jump between layouts and that would certainly be asking a lot of the optimizer.  The parent will look for energy from each WRG in descending order down the hierarchy, correct?  I have some areas of overlap and definitely want to prioritize one WRG over the other.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Nathaniel

Yes you're right. It will start at the top and work down so you want your catch-all to be last.

Glad you figured it out.
