Power Density

Up to Bug Reporting

Power Density

Posted by Alicia at September 09. 2009

Hey,

I don't know if this is a bug, or if I'm missing something.  Have you noticed that the max and mins on the power density layer that is created when you open a WRG don't actually match what's in the WRG?  I've always assumed this layer and the wind speed layer were just for visualization, is that right?

Thanks Nick. :)

Hey Alicia,

Not sure what you mean. Care to send me an example? You're right though that these rasters are purely for display (although of course if you want to use them to limit the optimiser they can be useful for that too).

See you in either Minneapolis or Toronto in the coming weeks?

Hi, I am trying to create a Power Density raster in OpenWind, where is the option to create this in the program? I have created a wind map already, but this only exports a wind speed raster. Also, when comparing WASP to OpenWind wind map results, I have found that OpenWind is producing results 0.5m/s less than that of WASP. I have ensured that turbeulence intensity % settings etc are matching those for the WASP analysis, and I am using the exact same roughness, elevation rasters as in WASP. Are there any other aspects that may need to be set properly that could be causing this discrepancy?

I thought you said you didn't have access to WAsP ;)

Anyhow the aim of the model in openWind is not to match WAsP output. It is to attempt to accurately model the wind flow over the terrain based on the available data.

Different models will give you different results. If you trust WAsP more, go with those results :)
