Windflow model in Opensource

Posted by Jean-Paul Pinard at March 19. 2009

Hi,

I was referred to OpenWind by a colleague. I checked out the executable and read through the documentations looking for the windflow aspects. In the forums you mentioned adding a windflow model to OpenWind. Were you planning on using msmicro for your windflow model? If so then this software will be of interest to me. I use msmicro but in the old DOS versions.

Welcome Jean-Paul.

The wind-flow model currently in openWind is Michael Brower's adaptation of what was originally the NOABL model. I have talked to Jim Salmon about the possibility of incorporating MSMicro into openWind and he did express a certain amount of enthusiasm for the idea. However, as it stands just now, MSMicro is released under the GPL which is incompatible with the OSL due to its viral nature. I will try to convince Jim to release it under an OSL-compatible license as clearly it has been licensed under more  than just the GPL as it is in Windfarm which is not GPLed.

Then we will just need someone to convert it to C++ as I did for the NOABL model. Any volunteers? You could use my WindMap code as the base.

Seriously though I would like to see the MSMicro model in openWind but no its not in there just now.

Cheers,

Nick

hi

am actually working on developing a CFD wind model from OpenFOAM open source code. i will be using the SIMPLE algorithm and the LES as well. it will be a great contribution if I am able to incorporate it in openWind, it will definetely ease the development effort greatly. do u have any idea if any body is working to do a similar task???

cheers;

Hasan

Hi Hasan,

There are at least one other group working on adding CFD to openWind. The LES sounds interesting though.

I think there is a case for me to creat a base class for others to use as the basis for their windflows. Leave it with me for a little while or if you can't wait, you could strip out most of the code in WindMap.h and WindMap.cpp and replace it with yours for now and see how far you get.

At present, getting setup with UPP is a little complicated depending on the platform you're using although several groups are independently compiling thier own versions of openWind.

I'll look at writing a howto in the near future.

Hi Nick and everyone,

I saw you were talking about developing an MS-micro model for Openwind.

Is the project currently going on? Are you still looking for some volunteers?

Do u know if does it already exist or if someone is working on a linear flow model, like a MS3DJH based model (MS-Micro or MSFD) as an open source code?

Cheers,

Matteo
