Optimising a layout using two or more met masts

Posted by nick at February 27. 2008

Ok, I was woken up one night with the realisation that this can be very easily achieved with openWind. In other established wind farm software packages, one tends to need to optimise the layout using one or no met masts then to assign turbines to met masts and do an energy capture or some other equally unsatisfying work around.

In openWind, it is easy to optimise with two or more masts at the same time by splitting the site area up into areas (polygon layers) which can be associated with each mast. By having one site layer containing several copies of the same WRG, each with its own met mast layer and associated polygons determining their area of applicability, the optimiser is free to move the turbines around the whole site whilst still making sure that turbines inside a specific polygon layer have their energy capture determined using the correct met mast.

If you want more details on this, please work through the tutorial which is available from the downloads page. If you have diligently worked through the tutorial and you still have questions, please post in this thread.

Hi Nick,

thanks for your activity. It's possible to work with two met masts but one windfield?

Hi Florian,

Yes, you need to make a copy of your WRG for each additional mast and assign areas of validity to each copy of the WRG. I believe this is covered in the tutorial.
