Thanks for Open Wind / some HELP

Thanks for Open Wind / some HELP

Posted by James Neville at November 11. 2008

Just a quick note to say thanks for sharing your work and can anyone offer some help! :)

I was looking to use this as a component of an MBA paper, though I have to admit to getting stuck beyond the tutorial.

Everything makes sense, aside from where to source data for my own projects - without sticking a mast up!

The only 'open source' wind data I can find is not in compatible format, and I can't find any data in the Wind Resource Grid format (WRG) - is this Open Wind (True Wind) format only?

I'm looking at using data from:-

SWERA (ESRI format)

http://swera.unep.net/index.php?id=data_search&action_method=external_archive_query&datatype=4,79&geoarea=-1&energycategory=17&orderby=geoarea

NRL (ERSI format)

http://www.nrel.gov/gis/data_analysis.html

I can load ERSI data as a vector layer, but can this be viably used as a Wind Resource Grid?

If not, any suggestions on where to source some? ;)

Thanks in advance,

James Neville

Hi James,

WRG is a format defined by Risoe in Denmark for use by the WAsP software. You can use WAsP to make WRGs.

I took a look at the shape files you linked to and they only give the wind power class. If you can find something better, perhaps you can send it to me or give me a more direct link and I will take a look at it.

Depending on the timescale, openWind may be able to do everything you need anyway as we just started looking at incorporating a windflow model into openWind.

It may be possible in the near future to use a grid of relative mean windspeeds by direction together with a wind frequency table to do an energy capture.

Nick, I am beginning to know OpenWind. i think it is a great tool, i
just dont know where to start. my 3 basic questions are: 1. does
openwind have a data of countries (vector data)? i have a project in
Mexico, i know where, I have data - does OpenWind database contain
layers for LAtin maerica? 2. if i have wind readings site-specific how
do I insert it to openwind (what is the format type of my data file to
insert it into Open Wind) and - back to question 1. how do I put those
data to the specific site? 3. are these format compatible wth OpenWind:
(.asc, .dbf, .prj, .shp, .shx, .e00)

and what layer are they (vector or raster or ?) i think theye are from the same swwera/nasa database).

Thank you so much, have a great day! Gabi.

As far as I knowm, there is no "database" in openwind.

Read (and work through) the tutorial, and you will know how to insert data in openwind.

.asc are ascii grids, and that's avector format.

.dbf, .shp, .shx forms a so called shapefile, which is vector data

.prj is aprojection file, that often comes with the above mentioned shapefile.

The above formats are possible to open in openwind. I don't know about .e00 though, haven't used it myself.

There is no e00 format support as yet although its easy to add if anyone has the time :)

ASC is used as a raster format in openWind so you can use it to import terrain data or roughness data etc.

I think there is work underway (not by me) to add database support to openWind.
