OS Survey

Posted by nick at March 11. 2009

As my recent crazy efforts to incorporate a whole bunch of improvements before EWEC 2009 draws to a close, I am wondering where you all think my efforts should lie. Which operating systems are the most relevant?

Ubuntu 32 bit

Ubuntu 64 bit

Windows XP 32 bit

Windows Vista 64 bit

Other?

I am tempted to move away from XP altogether and concentrate my efforts on 64 bit Operating Systems but that might be way out of step with the majority of openWind users. Please post here and let me know what you're using now and in the near future.

Hopefully we can add a polling feature to this website in the not too distant future...

Nick

I am using XP and expect to be using it for a while. My IT department is wary of Vista and they choose the OS.

At the moment, our company uses XP 32-bit, and the most likely development will be for us to skip Vista entirely and go for windows 7 instead.

Good move! Windows 7 looks slick from what I've seen so far (although I've had no real problems with Vista - turn off UAC and make sure you're using 64bit ultimate edition on a suitable PC).

On the subject of OS support, I will be, unless a host of you scream otherwise, removing support for 32bit Linux in the next release. Of course you will still be able to take the source and compile on that platform as you can for any other but I will only be supplying executables for 32bit Windows, 64bit Windows, and 64bit Ubuntu.

If the uptake for Windows 7 64bit is as enthusiastic as looks likely then I hope to remove support for 32bit Windows in a year or so.

In other words folks, do not go buying PCs with 32 bit operating systems if you want to keep running openWind two years from now.

Cheers,

Nick
