openWind and smartphones

Posted by nick at September 25. 2009

So I've been asked if we will make a handheld version of openWind for the iPhone and unfortunately the answer is no as Apple are not easy to code for and UPP does not work on that platform.

So the question becomes, what other smart phones are worth supporting? The Nokia N900 looks like a good candidate as it runs a fullblown Linux (Maemo) as its OS and is pretty much a hand-held pc. However, this is just one phone and may not be even available in North America. Android would be the other candidate as this is available on lots of phones but Java is slow slow slow so there is no way openWind would run on it (even if I did have the time to port) although it might be worth making a customised version of Google Maps which would take things like turbine positions and house (environmental sensor) positions from openWind and allow you to edit them in the field and then re-import them back into openWind.

Any thoughts?

Nick
